The holidays are here and with many ways to celebrate and highlight the season, one of my favorite things to see are beautifully decorated tables. The table setting is always a showstopper and definitely adds to the festivities. To do this on your own doesn't have to break the bank or require you to hire an interior designer (unless you want to), just pull out all of your creative juices and even consider using decorative pieces you have around the house to bring it all together.
For this tablescape, I went for a snow cabin feel simply because I love the snow! Being a native from the Northeast, I have a thing for the white stuff and here in Texas, we don't get much of that at all. Having the ability to design a tablescape where I can include items that remind me of my hometown is what makes this such a fun and heartwarming activity.
Here are a few tips when creating the perfect tablescape:
1. Create a focal point. Stay with theme of the season and color schemes of the holiday you are celebrating and be as creative as you'd like when designing the centerpiece. Always remember this is the first thing your guests will see so you'll want to create something with height that will be the anchor for all the items you will add to the table.
2. For inspiration, use the decor around your home for inspiration. Think about the mood and design you've created in your home. Is it casual, elegant, modern? Whichever you choose, keep the same theme as you work on your table. This makes it much easier than starting from scratch and helps to carry the decor all throughout the house. Be sure to include some texture and add different elements that really bring the table to life.
3. For a cozier feel, incorporate natural elements such as greenery, garland, trees, and floral. I personally love a more rustic modern look around the holidays and adding a few trees always gives me that cabin ambiance. The choice of lighting such as tapered candles or tea lights always sets a particular tone, and you can make your tablescape elegant by adding chargers or placements, special dinnerware, glassware, and flatware along with beautiful table linens, runners, napkins, and napkin rings. Whether a little sophistication or whimsy, this is a time to really showcase your style and personality into the decor.
4. Leave a small gift at each table setting. How do you think your guests would feel if the giving just didn't stop under the tree? Something simple like a sweet treat in a cute gift box or a special item that they can keep for years to come. And don't forget the place cards! You can make these into take home items as well.
After you've created your tablescape experience, take a moment to really admire your work and the reactions from your guests. You will find that dressing the table doesn't have to happen just for the holidays. You can elevate every meal experience by taking a few key elements from these tips and incorporating them into your daily home maintenance routine. It's the attention to detail and the special touches that will have you wanting to gather around the table all year long.
As always, share your feedback and don't forget to take a few pictures of what you come up with.
